GNex came out for GSM first, LTE later. They just want to get it to market cheaply, quickly, internationally, and will work on VZW and other LTE carriers imminently. Should be available in LTE flavor early next year.
of course, the VZW GNex defeated the sole purpose of the Nexus, in that they don't get timely updates. If they release an AT&T (or another VZW) LTE version, I suspect the same would happen.
