I have noticed too. It's quite obvious that the person at the other end does not have much interest in every detail of their their trip. But they go on and on about
  • when they would return and what options they have for getting back home from the airport,
  • which option they might exercise,
  • how their dog was doing in their absence,
  • gossip about neighbours,
  • details about their relative they probably don't even see
  • how they are looking forward to being home and see the person at the other end
  • how they are sitting in a very nice and exclusive lounge.
I have seen people having the same conversation with different people. Every time it appears to be very one sided. When it's clear that the person at the other end does not have the free time the caller does, they end the conversation and call another.
