Where are you flying on to?
If you are flying to a schengen country (including onwards in Italy), you will have to clear immigration. You will have to collect luggage and clear customs if you are travelling on separate tickets, as BA won't check your bags through.
Obviously you will need to do both, customs and immigration, if your onward flight is from the other airport... ;- )
