EWR is an expensive airport to operate in/out from... Landing fee for a private jet is $600 and that was a few years ago, 737 will cost more.
I, honestly, do not think the O/D traffic is there out of PDX to accommodate two airlines serving the route. UA has down gauged some SEA flights to 73Gs and reduced a lot of frequencies.
There are two a day - both leave about the same time... UA ( was a CO flight) to EWR at 6:50am and Delta to JFK at 6:55am. Of course there are a couple of redeyes on UA and Jet Blue. The delta flight is great as it comes back at 5:30pm (used to be 7:15) and of course it's AS miles and great connections via to European cities and the NE via DL. But that flight is ALWAYS full. I'll bet with AS being the 500lb gorilla it is at PDX if they put on a EWR flight it would work because of folks wanting AS miles. I will note I did not know it was s difficult to get slots at EWR.
