I would assume it is more an issue of them profiling you and determining that you are likely to be able to support yourself. I assume I could guess what you put on the immigration form and that would give them this information without needing to ask.
Makes perfect sense. Anyone staying at an SPG property (address in Thailand entry on the white arrival form) is unlikely to become a public charge.
