It has been some time since I've posted or even lurked here. The last time I traveled UA was Oct 2011. My wife and I and our 7-month-old daughter are traveling to Japan this weekend SMF-SFO-ICN-KIX, with a 40 hr layover in Seoul. The baby is ticketed as a lap infant. My wife is Premier Silver and I am the lowest of the low (general member ).
I have searched the UA forum here and the UA website but I am still a bit confused about luggage policies... we have never traveled with a baby before.
I understand that we can gate check a stroller without charge.... what about the carseat/baby carrier (it is the kind that detaches from the stroller to carry around or attach to a base belted in the car)? Is there a charge to check that? Does the lap infant ticket allow for a checked bag for the baby? We phoned reservations twice and got conflicting info from agents.
We are bummed to learn that 2 checked bags are no longer free... unlike last year when I went once and my wife twice to Japan. However, when I play with the trip planner on UA.bomb it seems that if we were to fly nonstop to KIX without going thru Korea 2 free bags would still be allowed (?). The reason we are not flying direct SFO-KIX is that when we ticketed in August the fare was ~$300-400 higher for the nonstop. Any suggestions what to do/see/eat in Seoul on a short layover (never been there)?
