Your post doesn't really fulfill the title of "wild" upgrades, somehow that sounded much more exciting. Sometimes the crew move customers on board, it sounds like the customer you saw being moved was travelling with one of the operating crew. It's relatively common practice on many airlines, and indeed throughout the hospitality industry.
