The no shorts "advice" is absurd. Wear what you want. If you're really worried about your legs burning off, then you probably should never cross the street either.

However, I do make a practice of leaving my shoes and street clothes on for take-off and landing. Heaven forbid there does need to be an evacuation (fire or not), I'd like to have feet protection and not be half naked outside.
