Get a USB to hard drive adapter. This will allow you to plug in the drive directly into an adapter (IDE or SATA) and then into your computer with a USB cable. These are under $20 at places like Fry's Electronics.

You can then format the drive. You could do this with a command prompt and have more options such as FAT32 or NTFS and allocation unit size.
