I suspect some of this would have been weather related, in which case BA cancel short-haul flights, on the basis that you are more likely to have other options than a long-haul passenger.
The reason I started the thread was that North American airlines definitely cancel flights due to low loads(although they don't often say that's the reason of course). I had some options of TATL flights to the continent if I couldn't get the YYZ-LHR one I wanted so I was just concerned that getting back to the U.K. might be a pain if BA cancelled flights. Since I'm landing in the U.K. I'll find some way to get up North even if it involves a car rental I suppose.
