Partly replacement ultimately for 747 Classics (-100 and -200) and DC10s, but also to fill the gap left by lack of Tristar replacement, having flogged some to the RAF, but needing to replace those that left in 1991 or that remained with Caledonian.
Not sure about the replacements for those that went from BA to the RAF you know. The 6 TriStars from BA went to the RAF shortly after the Falklands war so this was more than 10 years before the 777 entered service. So 777 replacing those flogged to the RAF....Hmmm

In a historical book about BA from the 1980s TV series on the airline there is a whole chapter on how they choose their aircraft fleets and it focuses on one that was topical at the time....the TriStar replacement. It was the 767 that was chosen for this job, deliveries starting in 1989 which coincides with the start of the phasing out of the TriStar fleet.
