Maybe its just my awful luck but EVERY single time I have been on the back end of an overseas flight I haven't been upgraded. I was 0-6 at Platinum last year.

TCONS xSFO are generally tough for CPU's in part because it is an Asia - East Coast connection point and anything booked in TPAC F/C will book into F/C on 3-cabin and F on a 2-cabin. EWR is particularly tough because there are no CPU's on p.s. and those headed to NYC hoping for slim chance at CPU must fly to EWR.
