It's not that the people are stupid... but it's a bit stupid to assume that these short trips will earn you enough miles to get a free ticket. One look at the redemption chart and you know you need a at least a few long-hauls to earn anything decent.
But of course they are right about the taxes, that is a bit of a scam and information on that is not readily available.
