Shoes matter far less than your socks.
As long as your shoes fit properly and are appropriate for the conditions you're walking in...you're fine.
Now...go to REI and buy four pair of marino wool trekking socks. Trekking is important. Just tell the REI rep what you need, he/she will know what you're asking for. Blue or brown will be your only option (as well as size). They're not fashion statements. Four pair will last you 20 days without a need to wash them. If this sounds gross, it's because you're used to cotton socks. Four pair: About $100 total. If you're planning on doing laundry on your travels, you can get away with two pair.
If you get water in your boots while hiking, swap out your socks, turn the wet ones inside out and tie them to your pack to dry.
If you're buying new boots, try on the new boots with the trekking socks. They're thick.
Have fun!
