As someone who travels a lot for work, it took me 2 years to figure out what I wanted to do in regards to my FF programs. I flew UA, and did the whole, 5 segments to from Phoenix to Tampa, just so I can make 1K, I don't do that anylonger, I have switched airlines. Like you, I want to supplement my earnings with CC.
My advice with airlines is, look at the alliance you want to fly with, whether it is One World (AA), Sky Train (Delta) or Star Alliance (UA and US). This makes a big difference when traveling abroad... All of my travels for work are on domestic flights, however, having elite status helps when traveling period... Also do not forget about Car Rental programs too...

I haven't yet developed a constant travel plan for myself. As of right now I'm stuck in a boutique hotel without a loyalty program in Stamford, CT. Been there for almost a full year now. (Name brand hotels cost significantly more in the area and cost was a concern from a budget standpoint for work)
In terms of what I want to get out of rewards, I'd prefer travel rewards, so airfare and hotels. I recently took a trip to Miami Beach and paid with sapphire points and the hotels were paid with a friends SPG points. This is what originally started me on this path. I think I'm going to commit to either SPG or Hyatt in terms of hotels since they seem very valuable and the properties are nice.
I'll post again once I have some specific questions =)
