I can't remember the last time I showed my passport. I have no obligation to carry it and they have no right to insist on it!
About a year ago, I was connecting to EI from my trip from Aus. Only went to EI check-in to change seat and was asked for photo ID. Gave a work id but they changed that to be a driver's licence. Gave my Aus license and they then said it had to be a UK or Irish license. I refused and they called immigration in Dublin as "they were not allowed to let me on the plane without passport or Irish/uK licence".
Immigration advised not to allow me on until I spoke to the Garda on the phone. I asked him was he denying me entry to Ireland and what was his name? At which point the problem magicked itself away and I was allowed to board. At Dublin I showed boarding pass and photo (work) id and was waved through without comment.
Another time a couple of years ago I even managed to illicit from a Garda that I did not need a passport for entry but I needed a passport to prove that I didn't need one.
You gotta love the logic
