In Amsterdam, rent a bike!! It is an amazing way to see the city. Also, some things are spread out (i.e., museum district) so I used the tram and/or bikes a lot.

I don't do multiple shoes....but when I get back each evening I do try to soak my feet a bit if I have a bathtub.

I take a lot of breaks...sit in a church for a little while and relax. Find a random cafe and eat some yummy pastries or drink a beer.

It's rare that you'll actually walk the entire day....so just take lots of breaks!
I'd second renting a bike. I walk all over the place no matter where I visit, and it's great, but if time is a major issue, and you are confident about the legality of riding on sidewalks...it's a great diversion, IMO. It seems rent-a-bike stalls are gaining in popularity, whether in Europe, China or the US too.

If you're not too keen on that, I'd take periodic breaks getting unsweetened drinks during long walks.
