Were the two of you interacting in public in a way that other people might find inconsiderate? (I'm put off by any people making out in public, gay or hetero...) If so, please remember that cultural sensitivity is a two-way street.
Have you ever been in a situation with your heterosexual partner where 1) You weren't making out, but 2) Someone might get that you two were together?
I suspect you have, and there's your answer. Your comment reminds me a lot of things you hear about gay people "flaunting their sexual orientation," which usually consists of doing things (pictures of their partners on their desk, etc...) that straight people do all the time.
