Is through flight status determined by my AA flight number? Or, is it determined by the fact that LGW to VCE is on BA metal, which means it's not a through flight?
You will be protected (given that you have that AA flight number, I assume that your flights are on the same ticket)

If the AA flight is so late that when you land in LHR you are already under the legal MCT for LHR-LGW connections, I would talk first to the BA personnel. Maybe you could be rebooked on a LHR-VCE flight and not deal with the long transfer to LGW.

If you are still within the MCT you should just rush to LGW.

Someone else here might provide you with the MCT for LHR-LGW connections, so you can decide what to do when you land (if late).
