As far as the original question goes, given that I do not believe that it is possible to book the AA number from LGW-VCE without it being part of the same ticketed itinerary, then the airline will be responsible for providing onward service to VCE should there be a misconnect

AA should deal with the issue if known in advance; if you are at LGW then BA will sort it out
