DL planes and pilots can fly in freezing weather, which sometimes even happens in ATL. Even in the northern hubs of MSP and DTW, we don't see such cancellations for winter.
A better answer is that, depending on the day of the week, January 1 can be a very low travel day. Some partners like KLM adjust their schedules more for holidays, so there might be less need for feeder flights to JFK on January 1.
