Exactly - to have lunch. If you're going to the inlaws to have your roast goose or turkey you're not going to want to stop at McDonalds on the way...

I've never heard of anyone here in Denmark/Sweden going somewhere to have festive meal on Dec 24 or 25. They normally have these things done before and then stay at home with their families.
Eating out on Christmas Day is getting more common both in Germany (where I have family) and in the UK (where I live). It's a nice, easy, leisurely alternative to cooking a big family meal at home.
