To answer the OP's question, my attitude to the Silver v Gold debate is similar to that of
Genius1.
Although I'll re-qualify for Gold without going out of my way to fly BA, the feeling of 'liberation' (in being able to choose other airlines and not have to slavishly adhere to BA's routes/timetables) is a great experience. Some of the non-BA flights I have taken this year have been seriously good.
