As a regular flyer I usually find the same. However BA do release these seats for selection usually 48 hrs before take-off and not before. If you go in then you should be able to select the seats you want

I regularly see a progressive release, especially from T-72 onwards.
However it can move before then, if sales numbers are dicatating that either cabin needs to be above what it is currently set to. If so, ET expands forwards or CE backwards into the zombie space. But it is touched multiple times at T-72, -48 and can always be touched again....
