Front rows often blocked until closer to departure, perhaps in case BA get a minor flood of CE bookings and need to move the curtain back to accomodate?

I've got a SZG-LGW coming up and ET is currently blocked all the way back to row 8 (incl):

I think the chances of them selling 8 rows of CE on that route on that date are about the high as the chances of me earning a CCR card, but there you go...
