It's been a while since I've had any damage to checked in luggage (as I normally only carry a small cabin bag), but when I have, I've phoned BA, given them the details and then been given a reference number and told I can go out and buy a replacement item.
I've then faxed them the receipt and within weeks, received a check for the amount.
