A month ago, daughter booked a RT tix from TPA to MEX on AA.com. This was a Q fare, $200 each way, for a total of $400.

Daughter arrived in MEX and, through a total misunderstanding on my part, I ended up calling AA here in the US and rescheduling daughter's return to an earlier flight. I was billed a $150 change fee, which I authorized. There was no difference in fare; it was still a Q at $200.

Two days later I realized I had made an error, so I called AA again and asked to have the return changed to the original. I was told there would be another $150 change fee (which I understood) but that the new rate was $461 for a J fare.

I was looking right at the AA.com site and I saw that the particular flight I was asking for was a Q fare and priced at $232, which was $32 more than daughter's $200 Q fare earlier. When I pointed this out to the agents (plural--multiple calls) I was informed that the "rate desk" would only re-book as a J.

It was midnight and I gave up.

The next morning I called AA to see what other options there were, and it was then I learned that my daughter's return ticket [the one that I had changed in error and paid $150 for] had been canceled! I had never asked that the ticket be canceled, nor authorized anyone at AA to do so!

So I had to go back onto the AA.com site and book a one-way out of MEX to TPA. Granted, it was "only" $232. What is really ticking me off is the fact that AA went and canceled the other (return) ticket! Unbelievable!

So, two questions:

1. What is the best method to contact AA? I have the names of all 4 reps I spoke with at AA, should I assume it was the last who canceled it?

2. Is it a normal policy for airlines to re-book using a different fare/class schedule than the one the passenger originally selected, even if that original class/rate is still available?

Thanks.
Same thing happened to me. I had to fight one hour to get my ticket reinstated!
