Instead of flying 25k miles this year to remain Gold, why not sign up for a Platinum challenge and then fly 10k points (20,000 miles at deep discount fares)? That way, you'll be Plat next year instead of Gold and if you call AA after placing flights on hold, you can usually up-fare the deep discount fares to fares that earn 1.0 points per mile. That would mean you'd only need to fly 10k miles to complete the Plat challenge, and that should be easy for you.
If you're gonna spend a bunch of $$$, and fly a bunch of miles, why not leverage it into a higher status than you currently have?
