Once I do that, I'll fly whatever to Kunming (KMG), all booked at the same time. But MU and CZ both offer easy connection.
Are you sure that CZ and MU offer late evening connections that are legal after an international arrival at the time scheduled on DL? Similarly, for the return, it can be difficult to get to an airport served by DL in time to take the DL flight that day from mainland China to the USA. Remember that you go through immigration and customs at your first airport in mainland China. I've never tried to transit HKG to mainland at HKG so I don't know the system, although for the boats from HKG to/from Macao, you skip the formalities in HKG and never officially enter their country.
