Agreed. I couldn't find any such condition on the property's web site, in my email confirmation, or in the reservation details at hyatt.com.

I don't intend to cancel this reservation, so I guess in the end it doesn't matter to me on this reservation, but it's the principle…
It's only a few weeks in this case, but I've seen hotels, primarily resort properties but some conference rates, charge the entire amount to a credit card up to six months in advance of arrival when these were not nonrefundable rates. I consider it to be completely inappropriate, even when it's a stated policy, but much more so when it's done without warning. It could create a real problem for someone with a low limit on the credit card being used to guarantee the reservation if they're doing other spending/travel when the deposit is taken.
