Airspace is not relevant to my question here. I don;t don;t understand why Often1 brought it into the discussion.

Once you have been examined/questioned by the immigration officer and your passport stamped, are you in the U.S.? Whether passports are routinely stamped or not is not the issue also. I think it's a good idea to stamp you in anyway. It's documentary proof that you did return to the U.S. on the date of stamp.
