I agree with jiejie as just the effort of going through the whole process of getting to another country can take a whole day away from a vacation between getting to the airport, waiting, flying, de-planing, getting to the new hotel etc. That means just getting to and from Bali will take 2 days out of the trip.
Rather take the time and properly see Thailand/Cambodia.
Day trips out of Bangkok can also be arranged there and you can visit great places like the old capital ruins of Ayuttaya, the Bridge over the River Kwai and if you are looking for something beachy, Pattaya.

If they want to save some coin and add dimension to the side trip, I suggest they fly BKK-PNH spend a day or so, then road trip to Siem Reap which will take a few hours. Then road trip SR back to Bangkok (about 7 hour) or fly one-way from REP-BKK and hold their nose at the cost.
