I've stayed at this hotel probably a dozen times over the past year, and while it certainly isn't the nicest Sheraton I've ever been to, it is (as mentioned above) the only Starwood in town, and I've almost always had a good experience.
1. Front Desk staff has always (literally every single visit) been pleasant and friendly.
2. My experience with upgrades differs from clarkef - since making Platinum I've had a really solid suite upgrade %. Probably 75% or so.
3. Never stayed in the "old tower" so I can't speak to that.
I'm sorry, I was imprecise. I always get a suite upgrade as a platinum. Its that I have to work so hard to get it. Of all the Starwood hotels I've stayed in across the US and Europe. Only the Westin Pasadena has been stingier with their suites.
