I've flown upstairs twice and downstairs twice on the 747. Downstairs you get the widebody feeling. The seats (cubicles essentially) you get basically feel the same whether you're upstairs or down. You'll have the same amount of room. I personally like the upstairs more. I feel you're more personally attended to by the attendants and it's quieter than downstairs (there's only like 15 people up there with you...). I didn't feel confined at all. The seat was more than big enough for me and I'm 6'1. One complaint about upstairs though is it's a bit harder to see out the windows due to the curvature of the aircraft.
I flew NRT-TPE-NRT in J in Aug 2011 in a 744 (not a reconfigured 74S). I went down in the nose and came back on the upper deck. Going down the nose was nearly empty; going back the upper deck was completely full. I believe an FA on the flight going back said that DL puts non-revs on the upper deck before putting them downstairs. Was that/is that true?
