I found a make up case in a Japanese taxi when I arrived at my hotel and told the driver (or rather showed it to him). He had GPS tracking of his previous routes and set out to find the owner. A few hours later a hotel employee knocked on my room door and handed me a beautiful wrapped gift from that driver. A wonderful silk scarf.
One of the many reasons I love Japan, devotion to honesty and making things right.
However in most hotels in the world, you leave something behind and it is your loss. If I leave something behind on purpose I leave a note to define the situation.
