Avianca is generally accepted within the industry as being the 2nd oldest (still existing) airline in the world. 2nd only to KLM.
To make that claim, Avianca needs to count its 1919 predecessor the German-Colombian Air Transportation Society (SCADTA), but that's not much of a leap since most airlines count their founding date as that of the oldest predecessor that got renamed or merged into the surviving airline.
Looks like the Avianca brand as opposed to the airline dates to 1940 when SCATDA merged with another Colombian airline.
I'd certainly much rather fly Avianca than the
Training
Academy of
Central
America...
...but at least SAHSA (Stay At Home, Stay Alive) is gone from Central American skies!
