Is this cutting it too fine?
VS bag drop closes 60 minutes prior to flight, so you'd need to be done with that by 5pm. If your DL flight is on time, you'll be fine. VS leaves from T4, and you will likely arrive in T2 or T3, which is only a few minutes walk or AirTrain away.
However, if your DL flight is late, or something else goes wrong (bag gets lost, whatever), you're SOL. Neither DL nor VS is under any obligation to do anything for you, and you may find yourself buying an expensive new ticket. I'd suggest travel insurance if you don't already have it.
There is also a flight that gets to La Guardia at 3.30pm . .which I have discounted, as this is cutting it even finer right? With the airport change...
Yeah, that's not going to happen.
Will Delta check my bags all the way through to LHR if I ask in Detroit on the way home? Or should I bank on having to check out and back in at JFK.
Even if there were an interline agreement in place (and I'm not sure there is), I don't think it would apply if you're on separate tickets?
If 6pm is too soon, then theres a 7.25pm flight back to LHR.
What's your risk tolerance? How bad is it if you miss the 6pm and there are no seats left on the later one?
