Qantas has had daytime flights leaving LAX and LHR for Australia which meant better aircraft utilisation but they always seemed to be the first flights to be dropped when any pruning took place. I assume that people just did not want to take flights at those times. Where there was no competition for non-stop flights eg SYD-JNB and SYD-EZE they had immediate turn-arounds and passengers had to take those flights. But on the other longhauls to LHR and LAX where they have to compete they have to offer flights at times that people want to fly them and that seems to mean leaving an aircraft on the ground for half its life.
