Not sure what to tell you, but I've changed many flights and not lost upgrades on other legs. Maybe they cancelled the entire original ticket and issued a new one? In any case, I'd phone and see if you can change your return making it clear that you expect to keep your confirmed outbound upgrade.
Thanks... We did call, the Elite # and I told the guy exactly what you said - that I did NOT want to touch the return. He said he had to reissue the whole ticket ( perhaps because I was changing the outbound?) and that he needed to "be quick" to try to keep my return upgrade - with seat already assigned.
Guess he wasn't quick enough...
I guess at this point, the real question is, where I will stand in the pre airport upgrade queue and does that queue ever get cleared prior to, or during the SE,E,P window...
