If I start from my central London office near St Paul's, it takes me about 10-15 minutes longer to do the whole thing by Tube than either Tube+HEX or taxi+HEX. So, for me there is no dichotomy between "slow and cheap" and "fast and expensive". My main concern is to find out which method has disruptions, and to avoid the worst of the evening peak hour Tube.
We work terrifyingly close to each other
I much prefer LHR, but maybe that's because a lot of my memories of LGW are from before I flew anything other than Y. Sitting in a crowded terminal with thousands of kids does not make for a pleasant experience.
Remember though that if you're on BA out of LHR you may not be in T5. That would even things up.
