I would not trust the US State Department on this. They don't always get it right with regard to visa requirements for other countries (we've had discussions about this here before).

Timatic has this to say about Brazilian citizens visiting France and Italy:

Passport and/or passport replacing documents must be valid
on arrival.
So - no new passport needed!
