I've run into agents who are very bitter about this a few times. Once on AA several years ago, I even made a thread about it which has some good discussion:

Then again on UA last year at LAX. The agents acted like they were doing me a favor and were very rude to me. It's rather obnoxious as the membership clearly states two guests.
