What to Expect

I arrived for a 6-day stay yesterday and have a few observations that may be helpful. Cab from the airport was $20, including extra fee for two pieces of luggage and tip.

Check In: Efficient with a special counter for elites. I arrived at 1 p.m. and was given a room at 2 p.m. Interestingly, the hotel offers 500 bonus points if you forgo housekeeping services as a "green" initiative. There is an explanation on the counter about this option. I was given four $5 match play coupons for the casino. I asked about weekend breakfast for platinums and the front desk manager provided vouchers for complimentary breakfast at the coffee shop, just outside of the casino. It offers a very limited menu, but, nevertheless it was a nice gesture.

Lobby: Recently renovated and quite spaceous. I was told by the general manager that the rooms would be undergoing a soft goods makeover next year -- something sorely needed.

Room: First, as a platinum I was upgraded to an ocean front tower room on the 16th floor. I always thought the Dulles Airport Marriott had the smallest standard rooms but I believe the San Juan Marriott is smaller, especially the bathroom. But the balcony is quite nice and is a step down from the sliding glass down to the balcony. There's plenty of room for two chairs and a table.

Lounge: Open Sunday night through Friday morning. Last night's evening fare included, chicken kabobs, ham and cheese finger sandwiches, potato salad, crudites, tortilla chips with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream. Desserts included apple cake, chocolate cake, and cookies. Honor bar included beer wine, and spirits. Prices: Cordials, $10; cocktails, $9; wine, $6; beer, $4.50 to $5.50 depending on brand. The view from the outside area of the lounge is very relaxing with a spectacular view. While there are staff in the lounge, I was not asked any questions. Breakfast this morning included scrambled eggs, yogurt, breads, cereal and fruit as well as the usual breakfast beverages. Not spectacular but certainly sufficient. Soft drinks and light snacks (fruit and nuts) are available in the afternoons.

Grounds: Not spectacular by any means. The larger of the two pools is currently undergoing maintenance and is closed. The beach is nice with sufficient lounge chairs and umbrellas (included free as a part of the resort fee). I think the pool area would be fine had I not seen the La Concha Rennaisance property last night -- it was quite awesome!

Staff: Very friendly and accommodating. The general manager seems to be everywhere.

Overall Impression: The resort is fine and is a good value (I had a LNF rate of $92 plus resort fee, tax, etc.) But this property is old and tired and badly needs a makeover. Location is convenient and many restaurants are within walling distance as well as fast food places (Subway, Wendys, Uno's, Burger King). There are three small restaurants directly across the street. Taxis are readily available and the public bus stops just a few meters from the front of the hotel that will take you to the central bus terminal for 75 cents, or you can walk to Old San Juan in 30 minutes, but be aware you will arrive soaking wet from perspiration!
