Will RPU returned to me if I am put on CPU at t-24?

This question may have been asked numerous times, but I hope someone can offer an up-to-date answer:

I have a reservation that RPU failed to clear and I was told that I will be put on waitlist at the gate. This is a CPU eligible flight. If I did not apply RPU I will still be on waitlist for CPU.

Do I get my RPU returned in this situation if I clear the UG at the gate? Should I call UA and ask my RPU be returned at t-24?
