Upgrade chance depends on how full the hotel is, how many elites checked in before you, how long your stay is, etc.
You SHOULD kick yourself if the rate dif btwn PL & Marriott was only $20

Sometimes you can call the hotel directly and they will add the number for you. They may mention that the rate does not qualify for credit, and you can tell them that it is fine, but you want to track your reservations.
I can also attest to the price difference issue. I had a non-opaque rate that the hotel thought was a opaque rate so they split the folios (using the ZZ). I was only familiar with this tactic because I do use Priceline extensively (although not so much for hotels obviously). Unfortunately, I now have to chase down the points credit for the room.
