I mean this happens all over the world, especially to experienced travelers like us: running into travel industry "service" staff who have less of a clue then us. What I would do is make them talk, ask questions regarding the matter to find out if the gate agent just tells you what he thinks you want to hear or if he is actually looking into the system, finding your bag, etc.
