I am planning a holiday, and want to book Business Class tickets on points. The journey involves a connection. Saver awards in business are not available on one of the legs, so it shows up as a mixed award.

Assuming I book that, is it that

(a) I am placed on a wait list for business, but have confirmed economy for that segment.
(b) If not, is it possible that business availability on saver may show up later? IF so what should I do? Cancel/ rebook?
(c) AT the gate, if there are empty seats in business would there be a chance that we could get into business for that segment given that we have paid for business.

Would your answer be different in case

(1) I was flying United
(2) I was flying a star alliance partner for that segment.

So many factors to consider! In my case, if I am willing to accept a (significantly) longer stopover, I can get business in both legs. So was wondering whether should book that and then try and change the flight later. Alternatively, should I book ideal connections, and see if I can get into business anyway.

Thanks in advance.
So I just assumed since your posting here on the UA MP site, these are MP miles which are good for *A flights (if inventory is available). If this is not correct, you should ask mods to move your post to the correct airline program.

As far as MP miles and saver award inventory, it does change on a daily baisis. I don't know your status but 1K's (and maybe Plats) can change award dates/flights without any fees. If lower status, there might be fees and I just don't know what they are but I'm sure the UA web site will tell you.

Saying that, I have booked many MP saver awards. One thing if mixing awards, if you want saver your business and economy must have saver inventory. If you have found that then yes indeed you are booked in Y on one/some of your flights and business in the others.

As far as waitlisting, YMMV and there have been reports that they don't all clear once saver award inventory opens up. Thus, it would be a benefit that you take a active roll and continue to search for saver award inventory after you book a mixed flight. If you find it, call and get the UG. If you find different flights with saver inventory then you can call and see what the fees are and then decide if it's worth it or not.

Best of luck
