The same thing they do now -- send them back to the airline or go through an alternative identity verification process along with extra screening.
Someone that did much the same thing (for the same reason early this summer) lost their belongings and had more trouble with the TSA than if she had not changed a thing. This was because of how the TSA relies upon US asset/debt type record-reporting agencies in order to "verify" ID for adults with missing ID. I found it sort of ironic given her significant other with missing ID had far less issue with the TSA identity verification process because there wasn't the official name change mess.
