When I was there (2 years ago), they did not inspect bags for food when you enter Machu Picchu, but they do if you go to Huayna Picchu (but you could leave everything in a bag with the guards and take it when you return). Things might have changed.
I'd just spend more time at the ruins and then have a late lunch in Aguas Calientes. Not much to do there.
