For the most part I travel relatively comfortable when traveling on business (with/without staus). It is when I travel on leisure when I would like my perks to work for me.
My thoughts are as follows when booking a flight on leisure with family - please let me know if it makes sense or can be improved (this is for travel in North America):
Me (Plat/1K) - Buy the ticket (to get the status)
Spouse - use points or buy points enough for the ticket @.02 per mile (I would buy points insteading purchasing the ticket as my status transfers over). In addition as 1K I can redeposit the miles if my trip cancels.
Child 1 - same as Spouse
Child 2 - same as Spouse
(apply RPU whenever possible on non-status members)
This way everyone would have plat/1K status, all members will have a better chance of upgrading over all of us purchasing avg economy tickets, and the cancellation policy is much better.
Does this makes sense? Thanks in advance for you comments.
If you purchase the points for the award seat, ensure it's in the class of service you *want*. There is absolutely no way to apply RPU on award tickets, so your best bet is to get them all in Business award seats, then save the RPUs for yourself. If you want to use RPU, then purchase the seats for them.
